Trauma Therapy in New Jersey

"I don't know if I'd call it trauma... but I know it's still affecting me."

People often apologize when they say this. They tell me other people have had it worse. They aren't sure whether what happened to them "counts."

Sometimes they can point to a specific event. Other times, they simply know they've spent years feeling anxious in relationships, expecting the worst, struggling to trust people, or reacting in ways they don't fully understand.

Whether or not you've ever used the word trauma to describe your experience, those patterns deserve attention.

Trauma Isn't Defined by the Event Alone

When people hear the word trauma, they often imagine something catastrophic.

Sometimes trauma is exactly that—a single event that changes the course of your life.

But trauma can also develop through repeated experiences that leave you feeling unsafe, unseen, powerless, or alone. It can grow out of childhood emotional neglect, chronic criticism, difficult relationships, racial trauma, medical trauma, community violence, or living in environments where your nervous system learned that staying alert was the safest option.

Two people can experience the same event and be affected very differently.

That's why I don't spend much time asking whether something was "bad enough."

I'm much more interested in understanding how it shaped you.

It Often Starts With a Question

Many people come to trauma therapy after spending years trying to make sense of reactions they can't quite explain.

Something I Come Back To Often

One thing I often say in therapy is that people make sense in context.

The coping strategies that feel frustrating today often began as ways of surviving something difficult.

Becoming hyperindependent.
Expecting rejection.
Avoiding conflict.
Staying emotionally guarded.

These patterns often developed for a reason.

Understanding where they came from isn't about staying stuck in the past. It's about recognizing what those patterns once did for you and deciding whether they still serve you now.

If We Were Sitting Together

I’d want to hear your story at a pace that feels right for you, making space for what you are ready to share and respecting what might take time.

I’d be just as interested in understanding what life feels like today—the relationships that feel difficult, the situations that leave you feeling overwhelmed, and the ways you’ve learned to protect yourself. Together, we might begin to notice where those protections have helped you survive and where they may no longer be serving you

My work is grounded in evidence-based trauma therapies while recognizing that moving forward isn't about erasing the past. It's about understanding how your experiences continue to shape the present, so you have more choice in how you respond, relate, and move through life.
